That's Jim Wallis, pictured. His latest book is titled, The False White Gospel. I am writing, today, about a recent article published by Wallis in his Substack Blog, "God's Politics With Jim Wallis." You can sign up to receive his periodic bulletins, if you want, and I encourage you to do so.
The specific article I am advertising was published on September 19, 2024, and is titled, "A Theology of Democracy." Since this is a Sunday, I think it's a good day to advertise what Wallis has to say.
Primarily, Wallis is saying that our "politics" must be founded in a "theology," an understanding of who we really are and where we're at - and that our "theology" needs to acknowledge that we are dependent, ultimately, on a Creation that is both greater than and that fully encompasses our own. This is, pretty much, what I assert in my "Two Worlds Hypothesis."
Wallis uses the word, "God," in case you have an allergy to that word. But I do, too - at least sometimes - by making clear that the "World of Nature" is also, appropriately, called "The World That God Made." Wallis, besides believing in God, is a Christian. What he is discussing, though, is neither Christian dogma, nor doctrinaire.
As somewhat of an aside, and just because this is a Sunday, I am providing you with a link to an online testimony from a self-identified "Skeptic." If you click right here, you will find Michael Shermer, executive director of The Skeptics Society, and the founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, discussing "an event so mysterious that it shook [his] skepticism."
We would do well, I think, to be less skeptical about the origin and nature of our world - a world that we, ourselves, did not create, and into which we have been so mysteriously born.
You can read Wallis' statement about "Christian Faith and Democracy" by clicking that link. His emphasis is on "politics," not on the mysterious nature of our existence. Wallis would like you to read his statement. Then, if you identify yourself as a Christian, and are moved to do so, he would like you to sign on.
I did both.
