#137 / False Evidence Appearing Real

That image at the top comes from an election-oriented blog, "Chop Wood, Carry Water." The blogger in question is Jessica Craven, who describes herself as an "activist, organizer, and climate hawk." In her blog posting on May 13, 2024, Craven turns the word "Fear" into an acronym:

FEAR
False Evidence Appearing Real

Craven is talking about "predictions," based on "polls," that seem to show a former president heading for an election victory in November of this year.

Without having ever seen Craven's deconstruction of the word "FEAR" before (I have to say I like it), I am reminded that "predictions" are almost always a manifestation of what I call the "Is Fallacy."

We tend to believe that what "exists" is, by virtue of the fact that it does "exist," a statement about the inevitable nature and content of "reality" itself. In the past, I have also called this the "Observer's Fallacy."

In truth, the world is not created by "observers," but by "actors." The "realities" we confront in the world around us have been formed by what we "do" - and have done - and what we "do" originates in what we "think" (and what we hope, and what we dream). We should never forget this. We should never forget that each one of us has the ability to do something genuinely new, something never thought about or done before. When we do those things, "reality" changes.

Jessica Craven is touting "action," not "observation," in her election-oriented blog. Her recommendation, for those suffering the pangs of "FEAR" about our political future is, as follows:

Chop Wood, Carry Water

That is really good advice - and there is lots of time left before November!
