#225 / Sunday Sermon Song

If you hear the song I sing
You will understand (listen)
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
Some say that "fear is the original sin." It is true that not everyone agrees. Perhaps most would argue that disobeying God was the original sin

In the Bible story, God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit of a specific tree that God pointed out to them. And.... they did, despite God's clear instruction. Adam, conveniently, tries to put most of the blame on Eve, but he doesn't really think that this is going to excuse his conduct - as of course it doesn't. Both Adam and Eve have "partaken of the forbidden fruit," and thus they have both disobeyed God, and so they go stitch together some leaves to cover up their nakedness. When God asks them about that, Adam tells God that they were afraid, since they knew they had disobeyed God's commandment (Genesis 3:10).

Here is my take on this well-known story. The "original" sin wasn't, really, that Adam and Eve disobeyed God (He probably expected that). The "sin" was that they were afraid that God would not forgive them, or continue to love them, once God found out that they had disobeyed. In other words, the "original" sin was not, really, doing the wrong thing, and the original sin was not, really, being afraid.

The original sin was that Adam and Eve separated themselves from God by failing to realize who God really is, and that God loves us, and that nothing can ever separate us from the love of God. If you don't believe in God's love, if you don't believe that the Creation will support you, you are naturally afraid of just about everything in life. So, fear is right up there, along with disobedience, in trying to figure out the nature of that "original" sin. The real problem, though, is that we don't trust God, and the World that God made, and this is what has separated us from God. We have, essentially, kicked ourselves out of the Garden of Eden by failing to believe in God's love and God's forgiveness. Fear is the natural consequence of having done that, with death (also a consequence of that original sin) the greatest fear of all.

Love or fear? That's the choice, and we get to decide! That's what the Youngbloods tell us in their wonderful song, "Get Together." If we opt for "love," we find that we are (you might say "automatically") placed into a loving relationship with every other person.

Sunday is a time for sermons, and I think it's pretty hard to top the Youngbloods. They are replaying that Bible story, right there in their song.

Here are the lyrics to their song, entire. You can listen to them sing it by clicking on that video at the top. Click the title link for the lyrics online.

oooOOOooo

Love is but a song we sing
Fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

Some may come and some may go
He will surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

If you hear the song I sing
You will understand (listen)
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

Right now. Right now.
