... and it poked through my clothes
I followed the winding stream
I heard a deafening noise, I felt transient joys
I know they're not what they seem
In this earthly domain, full of disappointment and pain
You'll never see me frown
I owe my heart to you, and that's sayin' it true
And I'll be with you when the deal goes down
Bob Dylan, When The Deal Goes Down
I am definitely getting ready for this year to end, and this Bob Dylan song has just popped into my head. It's one of those songs that seems made for a looking backward / looking forward moment. You can click that link to the title if you'd like to see the lyrics.
Nostalgia? Possibility? Both are on hand. That's the kind of moment I mean. This year is ending: nostalgia. There is a New Year coming soon: possibility. Some sort of "deal" is about to come down, and as this year ends, who knows what happens next?
Upon reflection, it may well be that there is more nostalgia than anything else in this song. You can watch the "official" Bob Dylan video, below - and here's how it goes: Dylan sings his song. A badly-produced home movie plays in the video, with a few little references to those who have inspired Dylan showing up, sporadically. More nostalgia than anything else, it seems to me.
I think that plain old nostalgia (hold the possibility for the moment) is alright, too. Looking back, it has been a nice year!
As for Dylan's song, click the link and see what you think! If you haven't heard the song, give it a shot!
