I have recently finished the rather amazing second season of Orange Is The New Black, a drama-comedy series released on Netflix. Every episode in the series is introduced by a song by Regina Spektor titled "You've Got Time." One verse, in particular, always captures my attention:
Think of all the roads
Think of all their crossings
Taking steps is easy
Standing still is hard
We are, as a species, always busy, always heading in some new direction, always blazing paths to a new world of our own creation, always biting into the Earth to build those roads, and to build our own new world. In many ways, in fact, this is our glory.
Once in a while, though, wouldn't it be good just just to stop, and to appreciate the world into which we were born, the world that surrounds us always, that we don't have to build ourselves?
There is wisdom in that song.
Taking steps is easy. Standing still is hard.
Growth. Development, Taming nature to our purpose. That may be "easy." Standing still is hard.
There is wisdom in that song.
