Small Is Beautiful is a book by E.F. Schumacher.
During his first time as Governor, Jerry Brown employed its lessons in formulating a somewhat iconoclastic, but effective, way to approach the economic and political challenges of the time. Brown's "Small is Beautiful" approach did not escape criticism, since the popular wisdom was (and is) that what we really need is "more," not "more efficiency."
I'm in the "more efficiency" camp, myself, which means that I'm for "economics as if people mattered," which is the subtitle of Schumacher's book.
