The thesis I did to complete my honors program in Social Thought and Institutions, at Stanford University, was entitled, The Future Of Change In America.
I didn't keep a copy of my thesis, but I think I remember the main point: genuine change is not simply a continuation of what is already happening, on into the future. Genuine change doesn't just "happen to us." Genuine change occurs when we do something new, and shift direction, and create a whole new world.
The question for our country, I said, was whether or not we would be willing to defy the "trends," and to strike out in a different direction.
I still have that question!
