September 11th seems to be a day that bad things happen. On September 11, 1973, the Chilean military attacked the City of Santiago and El Palacio de la Moneda, where Salvador Allende, the popularly elected President of Chile, was defending his democratic government. Allende died in this center of government, and a brutal dictatorship succeeded him.
When I visited La Moneda last Saturday, I saw a statute of Allende, but I couldn't get to the Palacio.
It was fenced off and defended by Chilean police.
