Plastic water bottles have proliferated worldwide. Travel convinces me of that.
In places where available public water supplies may be unhealthy (and some of the places where I have been do qualify), there is, just maybe, some sort of semi-valid excuse.
In the United States: none.
In many ways, we "legislate" into existence the world in which we live. It's a time for a law against these bottles. They are a danger to the natural world and there is nothing inevitable about them or their continued existence. According to Wikipedia (and consistent with my own recollection) they basically didn't exist until sometime in the 1960's.
