113 / Change

I get older, and my hair turns gray. Population expands, and the city sprawls. Car manufacturers put out new models. The seasons.....change?

For me, the word change isn't something that happens to me. Change isn't something that happens to us. Change is something that we do; that I do; that you do; that somebody does.

I think that it was Heraclitus who said that change is the only permanent thing. But that isn't the kind of change I'm talking about. That kind of change just "happens to us." I don't think it's really a change unless we make it happen, unless it comes from something that somebody did.

I insist that we are actors, not just spectators. That's the kind of change I believe in: change that we accomplish ourselves, as we create a different world.
